Effect of Prolonged Smartphone Use on Trapezius and Neck Extensor Muscle Activity Using sEMG

The intensive use of touchscreen mobile devices has been linked to musculoskeletal issues, articularly in the neck and shoulder regions, often referred to as “text-neck.” This study investigates the effects of prolonged smartphone use on the activity of the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles in young adults (aged 20–25) using surface electromyography (sEMG). The primary aim is to evaluate muscle activity, head and neck posture during different tasks. The findings provide quantitative data on muscle activity during typical smartphone use, which can inform the development of targeted recommendations to mitigate the risk of pain and musculoskeletal injuries. The results emphasize the need for ergonomic solutions and preventive measures to address the musculoskeletal strain associated with smartphone use.
