Assessing the impact of using an elaborate attractiveness model on the calculated lightning performance of transmission Lines

The impact of using an elaborate new model of lightning attractiveness on the performance of transmission lines was assessed. The new approach indicates a significantly smaller number of strikes to the line in relation to the number es-timated by traditional attractiveness approaches. It also provides the distribution of their peak currents that exhibits low-er probabilities of higher peaks in relation to that in the region surrounding the line, used in the traditional approach. The outage rate calculated by the traditional approach is about twice larger than that provided by the new approach.
