All Optical 3-To-8 Line Decoder Device Design Using 2D Photonic Crystal

This paper focuses on the development of an all-optical communication network to achieve terabit per second bit rates, an essential requirement for future high-speed data transmission. Unlike conventional networks that rely on electronic components, an all-optical network utilizes photonic devices exclusively for data transmission, reception, and processing, leveraging two-dimensional photonic crystals (2DPhCs) for their superior performance and ease of fabrication compared to three-dimensional counterparts. 2DPhCs exhibit perfect photonic band gaps, making them ideal for creating various optical components such as routers, demultiplexers, decoders, and switches essential for an all-optical network.Recent advancements include the design of alloptical decoders, crucial for signal processing within these networks. Notably, decoders incorporating nonlinearity in the PhC platform have been explored, revealing significant findings on refractive phenomena and beam propagation at the PhC interface. Challenges remain, such as the high power requirements and limited data rates of existing designs. This paper delves into the evolution and optimization of 2DPhC-based optical decoders, with a focus on performance enhancement through design modifications. Studies have demonstrated improvements in signal-to-noise ratio, power efficiency, and decoding precision by adjusting parameters like defect size and lattice constant. Future directions point towards integrating additional functionalities and achieving dynamic reconfigurability in all-optical decoders, which are critical for the next-generation photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Through this comprehensive examination, the report aims to underscore the potential of 2DPhCs in revolutionizing all-optical communication networks and guiding future research towards more efficient and versatile optical devices.
