Implementation of a Direct AC-AC Converter Based Wind Energy Conversion System

This paper presents the implementation of a wind energy conversion system (WECS) type IV. The WECS type IV consists of the wind turbine, electric generator, alternating current-ac alternating current (AC-AC) electronic converter and the electric grid. A wind turbine emulator, a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), and a direct matrix converter (DMC) are used for the implementation. The DMC is used to manage the power flow between the generator and the grid. On the generator side a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control, a field oriented control (FOC) and a proportional integral compensator (PI) are implemented; while on the grid side it is intended to transfer the maximum power and regulate the reactive power. Finally, the results of the WECS and its controls are shown.
