Design High-Performance Data Center Network on Regular Topology with Greedy Connection

Large average path length between servers leads to a low data transmission efficiency in current data center networks (DCNs). In this paper, a server-centric architecture SWSC is proposed to optimize the average path length between servers. The underlying topology of SWSC is built on a regular network with a greedy connection, which gradually connects the farthest two servers with their available ports. The hybrid connection and multi-port NIC benefit SWSC multiple routing protocols as the shortest path routing, greedy routing, and multi-path routing. The experiment results show that SWSC can provide higher network performance than SWDC in terms of average path length, network diameter, bisection bandwidth, disjoint parallel paths, and greedy routing paths with identical equipment. The advantage of SWSC indicates that the proposed structure is a high-performance alternative to data center network construction.
