Modelling Man in the Middle and Denial of Service Attacks on Bullet Train Control System Using MATLAB

Communication systems are critical for the bullet train networks. These systems are susceptible to a wide range of cyber threats, mainly Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacks and Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks. These threats pose significant challenges, including the lack of robust real-time monitoring, limited scalability of existing systems, and delays in anomaly detection. The paper proposes an early attack detection and mitigation system to ensure the operational integrity and safety of the bullet trains. The proposed system consists of two methods: the first method alerts anomalies indicative of MitM attacks and blocks the payment gateway of the ticketing system; the second method accurately detects and mitigates the DoS attack. The proposed system was tested on real-time datasets; 108 anomalies were detected in the ticketing system for MitM, and a probable DoS attack was predicted precisely based on the conditions set for the following parameters:delay, throughput, and packet loss. The results indicate that the proposed system effectively provides timely alerts, detects and mitigates the MitM and DoS attacks.
