Exploring Interference in Knowledge Transfer During the Acquisition of a New Programming Language by Novice Programmers

The process of learning new programming languages sometimes involves the transfer of knowledge from previously learned languages. While knowledge transfer can facilitate quicker learning and enhance problem-solving efficiency, it can also present challenges, especially for novice programmers. This study investigates the effects of knowledge transfer between Java and Python, focusing on the performance of students who transitioned from one language to the other. Through an analysis of success rates, average attempts per problem, and common error patterns, this paper identifies the interference caused by prior knowledge in the learning of a new programming language. The findings reveal that transitioning from Java to Python is generally smoother compared to moving from Python to Java, as seen in the success rates and number of attempts required. Additionally, common mistakes and misconceptions during the language transition are explored, providing insights into how educators can better support students in navigating language differences.
