Enhancing BLE-based positioning system performance with proximity sensors

Nowadays, a growing demand for LBS (Location Based Services) is being observed, which leads to the rapid development of new indoor location systems and the constant search for ways to improve positioning accuracy. Most popular localization systems, Wi-Fi and BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) based, suffer from the errors caused by the multipath propagation and attenuation of the radio waves. In the paper, a novel approach for the positioning accuracy improvement is presented. It utilizes the multi-zone infrared proximity sensor and its ability to measure the distance to the person and the possibility to estimate the angle at which the person is standing relative to the sensor.
