Conduction current in insulating oils: components and parameters

The author studies experimentally the effects of the gap length, electrode shape, and electrode metal on the conduction current, for different types of dielectric liquids. The current waveform, in each case, is recorded using a short rise-time digital oscilloscope. Samples of these oscillograms are presented and discussed. A comparative study of the whole host of current oscillograms is carried out and presented, for each type of oil and collectively. The conduction current is suggested to be composed of two components: continuous and (spike) group. The continuous component is voltage independent. The group component has three parameters that characterize it: peak-to-peak, number of spikes, and time interval. This component is voltage dependent. The effects of the gap length, electrode shape, and electrode metal on each of the components and parameters of the conduction current are analyzed and discussed.<
