Standardization Steps for FAS in 6G Networks

The sixth generation (6G) of mobile communications systems has driven many recent academic and industry-led research efforts. This paper shows that timely technology evolution can greatly benefit from standardization efforts currently lacking in fluid antenna systems (FASs). It highlights the importance of standardization in promoting this technology, helping to reach the 6G targets, and mapping the actions we understand are paramount in this effort. Furthermore, the potential of FAS to improve the radio interface in 6G by improving the well-consolidated multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna technology and exploring synergies with emerging reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology is explored. This paper also summarizes the findings and encourages the academic community to work together to overcome the obstacles of standardization and achieve the successful implementation of FAS.
