Design and Techno-Economic Feasibility Analysis of a 170kWp Rooftop Solar PV in a Health Facility

The healthcare sector is one of the most energy-intensive industries, with hospitals requiring a continuous and reliable electricity supply to operate critical life-saving equipment. In developing countries like the Philippines, high electricity costs, frequent power outages, and over-reliance on fossil fuels exacerbate these challenges, threatening both operational efficiency and patient care. This study conducted a techno-economic analysis of a 170 kWp rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system installed at ACE Hospital in Butuan, Philippines. The analysis involved technical assessments to estimate energy production, system efficiency, and capacity factor. Economic viability was evaluated using metrics such as payback period, internal rate of return (IRR), and levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). Additionally, the environmental impact was assessed by calculating reductions in CO2 emissions and other pollutants. The system demonstrated high technical efficiency with an estimated annual energy production of 758,780 kWh and a capacity factor of 58.9%. Economically, the system exhibited a payback period of 3.97 years, an IRR of 26.1%, and an LCOE of PHP 2.30/kWh. Environmentally, the system is expected to displace 531,146 kg of CO2 annually. The findings indicate that the solar PV system is a viable and sustainable energy solution for healthcare facilities, offering significant economic savings and environmental benefits while enhancing energy security. This study supports broader adoption of solar energy in similar contexts.
