Enhancement of Ultrasound Imaging: A Novel Approach Using Image Processing Algorithms

Utilization of image processing techniques and algorithms is becoming popular and playing an important role to enhance the quality of ultrasound images of human body. This paper discusses the application of image processing techniques where ultrasound images are processed through the image enhancement techniques and then to obtain smooth ultrasound images, noise filtration is carried out using image median filter. For pre-processing and for reducing speckle of the ultrasound images, resolution enhancement and contrast enhancement are performed using frequency domain techniques. These pre-processed images are segmented using a Thresholding technique. A Canny edge detector is used to detect the outer lines of human body organs from ultrasound images and Morphological transforms; erosion and dilation are done to get close to the boundaries of such organ from the ultrasound images a bit further. The suggested approach enhances different organs such as Gall Bladder, Liver and Kidney. Medical ultrasound images are used to implement the proposed algorithm. This research work is beneficial to the medical experts for the medical diagnosis and educational training. It offers advantages of fast diagnosis and user-friendly methodology.
