OpenDER Model: Assessing IEEE Std 1547-2018 Voltage/Power Control Functions

This paper evaluates the OpenDER model’s performance in simulating inverter-based distributed energy resources (DERs) using IEEE Std 1547-2018 control modes. Integrated with OpenDSS via Python, the OpenDER model is assessed under Constant Power Factor, Volt-VAr, Watt-VAr, Constant Reactive Power, and Volt-Watt modes. Results reveal the model’s effectiveness in maintaining power factor and adjusting reactive power. The results demonstrate the model’s effectiveness in following the control curves proposed by IEEE Std 1547-2018, with only minor deviations in some cases, such as the Volt-VAR curve. Additionally, the differences between Categories A and B are highlighted for the same operating mode, which, in turn, affects the feeder voltage at the DER connection node. The dynamic DER response to voltage deviations is also presented, showing its ability to transition between Mandatory and Continuous Operation modes. The findings highlight the model’s strengths and areas for improvement, offering insights for better DER integration in power systems.
