Movement Behavior and Discharge Characteristics of Submillimeter Metal Particles Under AC Voltages Superimposed Mechanical Vibration

Submillimeter metal particles are inevitably introduced during the manufacture, transportation, installation, and operation of gas insulated switchgear (GIS). These particles can move and discharge under the influence of AC voltage and mechanical vibration (MV), significantly compromising GIS insulation performance. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the behavior and characteristics of submillimeter metal particles under these superimposed conditions is crucial. In this study, a multisource experiment platform is established with voltage and vibration sources to observe particle movement and detect discharge signals. Results indicate that particle motion can be divided into an initial stage and a development stage, with unique periodic motion induced by vibration observed in the development stage. Furthermore, superimposed vibration reduces the maximum partial discharge (PD) amplitude, while the mean PD amplitude remains relatively unchanged. The PD repetition rate is initially enhanced and subsequently suppressed. Considering Maxwell–Wagner relaxation mechanism, a possible explanation for the observed phenomena was proposed. This study is of great interest for understanding the movement behavior and discharge characteristic of submillimeter metal particles in GIS.
