Arduino Based Dual Cooling System Design for PLA-Titanium Filament Production in 3D Printing

This research details developing a sophisticated cooling system for a filament extrusion machine used in 3D printing, specifically utilizing a blend of Polylactic Acid (PLA) and titanium powder. The system integrates an Arduino microcontroller to achieve precise temperature regulation by leveraging a mechatronic approach. The innovative “Dual Cooling System” cools the filament in two distinct stages, first between 37°C and 38°C, and then between 25°C and 26°C. Equipped with a DS18B20 temperature sensor, the system monitors the cooling water temperature, utilizing a thermoelectric Peltier module and a water heater for accurate temperature control. Experimental results indicate a significant enhancement in the filament's tensile strength, with values ranging from 6.75 MPa to a maximum of 9.50 MPa. This study offers valuable insights into the application of mechatronic systems for advancing composite material production in additive manufacturing.
