A Pattern Reconfigurable Antenna Loaded with Multi-Circle Sectored Metasurface

A pattern reconfigurable monopole antenna loaded with metasurface is designed in this paper, which is suitable for sub-6 GHz fifth-generation (5G) applications. By loading eight metal arms with PIN diodes on the inner circle sector metasurface, the proposed pattern reconfigurable metasurface antenna can radiate a scanning beam with a 45° step. The pattern reconfigurable antenna is analyzed through the equivalent circuit and the field distribution. As can be seen from the simulation results, this design exhibits a 9.5 % overlapped -10 dB impedance bandwidth (3.29-3.62 GHz) and an 8.47 dBi peak gain in different radiation states. The proposed antenna has the advantages of high gain, flexible beam switching capacity, good radiation performance, and simple design, which is suitable for 5G indoor base station applications.
