Optical Fiber Simulation: Corning SMF-28 as a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) with Optigrating Application

This study explores how we can transform Corning SMF-28 optical fiber, a common commercial product, into a highly efficient Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor using simulation techniques. FBG sensors are widely used because of their ability to precisely measure strain and temperature by reflecting specific wavelengths of light. To enhance the sensor’s performance, we applied chirping methods and apodization, which modify the fiber’s structure to improve how it responds under different conditions. Our simulations focused on how different chirp periods, like linear, quadratic, square root, and cubic root, impact the sensor’s sensitivity—especially when it comes to detecting strain and temperature. The results showed that quadratic and square root chirps provided the highest sensitivity, making the sensor more responsive to changes in the environment.
