ARIELLE: AR-based Independent and Experiential Language Learner on the Edge

In this work, we propose ARIELLE, an Augmented Reality (AR) hand-held touch screen learning device to enhance the English learning experience for students in rural areas with English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and promote higher literacy rates. Deployed on the edge without the need for Internet access, ARIELLE uses a Computer Vision (CV)-powered AR interface to teach users the English names of everyday objects detected in their immediate environment through a live video feed as the user walks around and provide personalized ComputerAssisted Pronunciation Training (CAPT) for those vocabulary. With these features, we hope to address two main limitations of existing AR English learning solutions: the need for Internet access and the need for supplementary educational materials respectively, thereby increasing the applicability and relevance of English learning AR tools in rural areas to close its digital divide with the urban.
