Synchronous Reluctance Machine Control under the Voltage Limitation for Flywheel Energy Storage Systems

The problem of increasing the transient performance of flywheel energy storage systems in the processes of controlling active power exchange with the electric power system is considered in order to implement an emergency control at the network. The advantages of using energy storage systems based on a synchronous reluctance machine with a power frequency converter as high-speed actuators of emergency automatic of electric power system are noted. In the synchronous reluctance machine frequency control system, the current generation strategy (so called “Maximum rate of change of torque control”) is used, which ensures the greatest value of the electromagnetic torque during speed up and braking of the flywheel under limitation of the voltage amplitude at the phase terminals of the synchronous reluctance machine. An algorithm for the calculation of machine currents references has been developed, which implements the maximum speed of the synchronous reluctance machine transitions to motor or generator modes from the idle mode with the de-energized windings.
