Application Patterns of Synchronous and Asynchronized Machines in Hydroelectric Power Plants and Pumped Storage Power Plants

Hydroelectric Power Plants and Pumped Storage Power Plants use both synchronous and asynchronized machines. With equal power capacity, these two types of machines have different features, including various weight, size and cost performance. Their application involves the use of semiconductor converters and control algorithms of varying complexity. Other hydroelectric power plants and pumped storage power plants specifications depend on the system configuration. This article examines options for power plant equipment packages with various types of electrical machines, machine excitation systems, and various algorithms of their control. Known and new technical solutions for layouts, operating algorithms and system properties are analyzed. The article also shows the benefits of different configurations, including the advantages of transistorized exciters in terms of voltage boosting ratio, and asynchronized machines in terms of higher boosting ratio due to slip regulation. The possibility of operation of systems with symmetrical currents and voltages of stator and rotor phases at emergency disconnection of a part of transistor-capacitor units of the cascade converter in the excitation circuit of asynchronized machines is proved.
