An Internet of Things Based Single-phase Improved Accuracy Smart Energy Meter with Specially Designed Power Factor Measurement using GSM and Microcontrollers

This paper is about an IoT-based single-phase improved accuracy smart energy meter with specially designed power factor measurement using Global system for mobile communications (GSM) and Arduino controller. Here the IoT-based energy meter reading will be measured and this will be saved in the EEPROM memory of the energy meter also it will be stored in the cloud storage for IoT applications. Hence by using the smart energy meter, the consumer can view their utilized everyday energy from the cloud storage also the electricity provider can see the individual consumer energy in their office without any assessor’s help. A GSM module is united in the design with an Arduino microcontroller and energy meter module. The utilized energy will be calculated in the controller and it will be sent immediately to the ThingSpeak cloud. Here there is a dedicative Nano microcontroller is used for calculating the power factor, hence it will not disturb the normal energy measurement process in the main microcontroller. In such a way the total consumed energy of the individual customer will be calculated and the customer can view their electricity bills from anywhere in the world using their mobile with the ThingShow app also with the ThingShow wedges. The electricity energy provider can also be seen on the ThingSpeak website. It is a compact and cost-effective IoT-based smart energy meter with improved accuracy.
