Bending Losses Prediction on G652 and G657 Optical Fibers through Marcuse Formula

The huge demand for data communication has massively made the use of optical fibers that offer more advantages than other transmission lines, such as high-speed data transmission and robustness to interferences. Deploying a fiber optic cable should consider some conditions, such as coupling and bending. Some conditions require cables to be bent extremely small, such as when a cable must be connected through small spaces, pillars and corners. This bending loss can contribute to the total loss in transmission, which is much higher than macro bending. This research investigates power transmission loss of G652 and G657 optical fibers through the Marcuse Formula and also considers experiments from previous results. The observed parameter is losses due to turns and variations in wavelengths and bending radius. G652 fiber optic cable has a greater bending loss value than type G657 when the condition of the wavelength, bending radius, and the number of turns are the same. Bending loss achieves the highest results when the wavelength value is 1550 nm with 3 turns and a bending radius of 0.5 cm on the G657 optical fiber. The calculated results show comparable results with previous experiments. It shows that G652 has lower losses due to G657 due to the refractive indices differences. The Marcuse formula can be used to predict the micro-bending loss of optical fibers.
