Securing Silicon Photonics Supply Chain Threats and Opportunities

Silicon photonics and co-packaged optics (CPO) represent significant advancements in the semiconductor industry, enhancing data transmission speeds and integration density. These technologies enable the convergence of photonic and electronic components on a single chip, improving performance and energy efficiency. Key opportunities include increased data center efficiency, reduced latency, and meeting high-speed data communication demands. However, the supply chain faces several challenges. The challenges encompass the complexities of manufacturing and integration, the need for co-packaging solutions, and concerns about supply chain security, particularly with the reliance on offshore facilities. Addressing these challenges requires substantial investment in onshore co-packaging capabilities, especially silicon photonics, and a robust supply chain strategy. This paper explores the opportunities and challenges within the silicon photonics CPO supply chain and underscores the importance of developing a secure, efficient, and resilient infrastructure to support the future of semiconductor innovation.
