Simulation of Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) Filter Performance for GPS Anti-Jamming

The act of deliberately directing electromagnetic energy towards a communication and/or navigation system with the purpose to interrupt or inhibit signal transmission and reception is known as jamming. Jamming is used to send high signal to disrupt the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) communication and force the UAVs to land. This prevents the operator from receiving UAV, which results in the UAV losing control. Jamming activity may present a substantial threat to the communication security of the country especially for military. A Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) filter is the alternative option to mitigate jamming activity. The FSS filter has several benefits such as effective performance in term of having high bandwidth and high transmission, low-cost and lightweight material which is suitable to be implemented for UAVs. In this paper, we investigate the performance of proposed FSS bandpass filter using Ansys software simulation at 2.4 GHz. The Ansys Software is used to design the band pass filter in a simple square shape by varying several parameters such as element length ($a$), width of aperture ($b$) and periodic length ($c$). A complete design and analysis of the proposed FSS square filter is based on the reflection coefficient S11 and transmission coefficient S21 are presented in this paper. The transmission of the filter is 97%. In conclusion, the proposed dimension of the square unit cell that can filter out the jamming signal for small UAV size is 38 mm, aperture width is 2.9 mm and the periodic length is 60 mm.
