2 The recent developments in 3D bioprinting: a general bibliometric study and thematic investigation

This chapter presents an analysis of biomaterial-based three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technology for fabricating tissues. In this study, the advances in 3D bioprinting are analyzed bibliometrically and thematically. A literature search was carried out on the Scopus database for documents related to biomaterial-based 3D bioprinting. To conduct this study, a total of 1,053 research articles from 2012 to March 2023 were reviewed. Bibliometrix (R package) and SciMAT tools were used to conduct this review in terms of bibliometric and thematic analysis. The analysis presents results such as contributing authors and coauthors, main affiliations, leading contributing countries, main relevant sources, and major themes. The derived results provide insights into the limitations and scope of collaborative research in the area of 3D bioprinting using biomaterials. In terms of publications and citations, the top three contributing countries are the USA, China, and Canada. It appears that 3D bioprinting for tissue engineering is a growing area of exploration. This chapter also explores the role of artificial intelligence in 3D bioprinting. The present study is the first to analyze the current state evaluation of 3D bioprinting.
