10 Finite element method investigation on delamination of 3D printed hybrid composites during the drilling operation

Composite materials are mostly employed in structural components but offer several other uses. One of the crucial activities in composite structures is drilling, which is usually the last one performed during assembly. Delamination in the drilling of the composite structure is a significant issue that can result in refusal and cause a substantial loss. Delamination can lead to poor assembly tolerance and longterm performance degradation, in addition to lowering the laminate’s structural integrity. The current work focuses on composite material drilling-related delamination. Spindle speed, feed, and interactions will be studied for their impact on drilling’s cutting characteristics. From the results, it can be observed that the quality of drilled hole and interlaminar bonding is improving with the increase in spindle speed.
