Simulation-based methodology for the design of a Linear Induction Motor for a transport application

This work introduces an iterative methodology for the design of a Linear Induction Motor (LIM) for light transport applications, based on the equivalent circuit model and dynamic simulations, meeting efficiency and power requirements. First, the paper describes how to derive the equivalent model and the state space model, used for dynamic simulations, from the basic primary geometrical and winding parameters. Next, the methodology is introduced as a flow diagram, providing insights about the parameters to be adjusted to obtain the required behavior. The use of dynamic simulations inside the iterative steps allows to consider not only the nominal behavior but also non-nominal and transient-behavior scenarios. The proposed methodology is then applied for the design of a LIM for a lowspeed transport application, having a combined load of 400 kg - 500 kg, running at 20 km/h, considering a target power factor of 0.7 and a target efficiency of 0.85 at nominal load.
