Dynamic Performance Optimization Based on Field Winding Energy Gap Compensation for Doubly Salient Electromagnetic Generators

The high reliability and robustness enable doubly salient electromagnetic generators (DSEGs) to be applied in hash operation environments. However, the large inductance of field windings and the large dc-link capacitors result in poor dynamic performance. Especially during the loading and unloading conditions, the dc-link voltage variation is difficult to suppress, and the transient time is long. A field winding energy gap compensation method is proposed to optimize the dynamic performance of DSEG systems. First, the functional relationship between the load and the field current under a fixed dc-link voltage (270 V) is derived. Next, during a sudden loading or unloading, the field current is adjusted based on calculations to compensate for the energy gap. Last, simulation analyses and experiments are conducted in a 9 kW 12/8-pole DSEG prototype. The results show that compared with conventional proportional–integral–derivative control, this method can effectively enhance dynamic performance of the DSEG. The dc-link voltage variation is reduced and the dynamic process is accelerated during load changes.
