Design and Development of a Personalized Stander for a Child with DiGeorge Syndrome: A Service-Learning Project in Biomedical Engineering

This paper presents the design and development of a personalized stander for a child with DiGeorge Syndrome, under-taken as a service-learning project in the Human Biomechanics course at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Cali. The project was conducted in collaboration with Neuroprematuros, a neurodevelopment program in Cali, aiming to create a device tailored to the specific needs of a boy with hypotonia and genetic deterioration. The methodology involved Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to translate user needs into engineering specifications, resulting in a custom stander that supports the child's physical therapy at home. The stander includes features such as adjustable support points, lockable wheels, and a folding mechanism for ease of transport. The project demonstrates the significant impact of integrating academic knowledge with real-world applications, contributing to the well-being of the child and his family while enhancing the learning experience of biomedical engineering students.
