Visible Light Communication

Summary

This chapter elucidates the forthcoming challenges facing current Wi‐Fi technology and explores the potential of visible light as a medium for future indoor communication, particularly for the Internet of Things (IoT), owing to its inherent safety. Despite the numerous advantages visible light offers over conventional radio communication, certain limitations are acknowledged. Opportunities within this realm are also examined. Furthermore, the emergence of a groundbreaking invention in visible light communication (VLC), known as light fidelity (Li‐Fi), is discussed, highlighting its capacity to deliver high‐speed internet connectivity within indoor environments. A comparative analysis of Wi‐Fi and visible light/Li‐Fi performance is presented, revealing superior VLC performance in both internet browsing and throughput over distance when compared to Wi‐Fi. Despite a decrease in VLC throughput with distance, it still outperforms traditional Wi‐Fi.
