Photonic Probes for Measuring Internal E Fields in Biological Subjects Exposed to EMP Simulator Fields

New miniaturized photonic probes have been developed, tested and used to measure EMP induced electric fields in tissue-simulating liquids. These probes and their fiber optic data cable are completely passive and non-conducting. An implantation calibration factor has been determined for measurements in air and in tissue-simulating salt/water solutions. A special parallel plate line with separate compartments containing air and liquids was used to perform the calibrations. Sensitivity of the probes is on the order of 10 kV/m in tissue- simulating liquids. Preliminary tests have been performed at an outdoor, horizontally polarized EMP simulator facility. The probes will allow, for the first time, experiments to be performed to measure localized electric field strength in various regions throughout the body of a full-size model of a human. This information will provide an improved basis for setting EMP exposure limits for personnel.
