Optimizing Power Distribution Network Reliability: A Comparative Analysis of Strategic Modifications

Modern electrical distribution networks shaped by technological advancements and urban expansion, ensuring enhanced service quality parameters has become imperative for efficient operation. Consequently, evaluating the reliability associated with power system outages has become a standard practice during the decision-making process of power system network design. This evaluation is crucial to ensure a consistent and reliable power supply for customers. This paper focuses on a comprehensive reliability study conducted on a typical power distribution feeder structure. The objective is to identify the existing reliability indices of the system within the evolving technological and urban landscape. Subsequently, various network modification options and innovative protection philosophy approaches are introduced to bolster the system's reliability. Following a thorough evaluation of diverse modification proposals, this study concludes that the optimal enhancement, in terms of reliability, involves altering the operational scenario for the first supply feeder from the source. Specifically, maintaining all the normally open breakers as closed in the feeders structured above, each rated at 33 KV. This strategic modification ensures a resilient power distribution network, aligning seamlessly with the demands of contemporary urban environments and technological advancements.
