Stepper-based Precise Paper Cutting Machine with PLC and HMI

Paper cutting operation has a very unique importance in printing and packaging industries. In small-scale settings, manual paper cutting is commonly used, while automated machines traditionally rely on gear, slider or geneva mechanisms to adjust paper length. This requires the use of different gears or other arrangements for different paper lengths. In contrast, our proposed machine employs a stepper motor integrated with the stretching rollers to feed and cut paper according to user-specified lengths, provided through the Human-Machine Interface (HMI). The HMI allows users to input the desired paper length and quantity. A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) governs the stepper motor’s rotation, ensuring precise control of paper length. Once the paper has been fed through the stretching rollers to the specified length, a pneumatic cylinder-operated paper cutter, also controlled by the PLC, precisely cuts the paper. This innovative system eliminates the need for multiple gears or Geneva, offering a more flexible, user-friendly, and efficient solution for variable paper cutting. It addresses common challenges in the printing and packaging industries, enhancing productivity, and maximizing safety of the operator.
