Design Process of a Small-Scaled Bladeless Vortex-Induced Wind Turbine with Tunable Resonance Mechanism

This paper discusses the design process of a novel small-scaled bladeless wind turbine that can tune its resonance frequency. The vortex-induced bladeless wind turbine is a renew-able energy system that converts the vibration of the structure to electrical energy using vortex shedding. However, a bladeless wind turbine works effectively at specific wind speeds that match their natural vibration frequency. Therefore, this research addresses this limitation by designing and analyzing the feasibility of a structure resonance tuning module that enables the bladeless wind turbine to adjust its resonances to the change in wind speeds. Tests were conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed system, which showed that it can adjust the resonance of the structure by 63% to increase the range of wind speed operation by approximately 60%.
