Opportunistic eXtemporarY 5G Encrypted Networks (OXYGEN) with Sidelinks

Device-to-device (D2D) communications provide users the means to communicate directly with one another regardless of the presence of existing infrastructure, such as cellular base stations or WiFi access points. This independence provides the flexibility for spatial reuse of license spectrum, allow selected users to extend and share their infrastructure-based connectivity with devices outside of a base station’s coverage, or provide users with the ability to continue to communicate with one another without relying on the untrusted infrastructure. Although there are several D2D variants of existing protocols, such as WiFi Direct, the D2D extensions offered by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) provide an unique opportunity to provide high throughput links directly to users. In what follows, we will present an initial overview of the work RTX BBN (BBN) has performed under the Secure 5G MANET program, where the state of the program is, and an overview for what can be expected of the Secure 5G MANET demonstration.
