Supersonic Cluster Beam Deposition for Soft Robotics and Electronics

Inspired by the biological world, soft robotics focuses on developing robotic systems entirely composed of soft materials that can safely adapt to their environment. In this field, expertise in soft electronics is essential, enabling the creation of flexible electrodes and devices capable of functioning under significant mechanical stress. Recently, supersonic cluster beam deposition (SCBD) has demonstrated its potential in producing stretchable and compliant electrodes by embedding metallic nanoparticles beneath the surface of soft polymers. This technique has led to the development of various smart devices for soft robotics, including strain sensors, supercapacitors, and actuators. In some cases, natural and biodegradable materials have been utilized, opening the door to transient electronics.
