Reimagining Wearables to Bolster Sustainable Development in Low-Resource Settings

Wearable devices have become increasingly popular over the past decade, driven by their wide range of applications and integration into everyday life. Positioned at the nexus of technology, convenience, and lifestyle, these devices present a flourishing area for research and innovation. This paper critically examines the potential of wearable technology for advancing sustainable development in low-resource settings, with an emphasis on reimagining and optimizing low-cost, commercially available devices. The analysis identifies several existing products with significant capability for repurposing. Furthermore, the study delves into the construction of basic wearables, exploring the essential components such as materials, sensors, power sources, and operating systems required for their functionality. To contextualize the design and functionality of wearables in resource-limited environments, the concept of frugal innovation is proposed as a guiding principle. Ultimately, this paper argues that innovative and creative reimagination of wearable devices can significantly enhance the development trajectory in low-resource settings.
