OTFS for Radar Sensing

Summary

In radar sensing, the objective is to use the received echo of the transmitted radar waveform to estimate the delay and Doppler of multiple targets present in the radar scene. A typical radar receiver detects targets from peaks of the magnitude of the cross‐ambiguity function between the transmitted radar waveform and the received echo. The delay‐Doppler (DD) domain cross‐ambiguity function is simply the twisted convolution between the DD spreading function of the channel and the ambiguity function of the transmitted radar waveform. DD domain signal processing and waveform design/analysis is central to radar sensing. This chapter introduces radar ambiguity function as a measure of goodness of a radar waveform. It presents the ambiguity functions for time‐domain and frequency‐domain pulses. The chapter discusses the design of good radar waveforms based on the modulated pulse train. It derives the ambiguity function of a Zak‐orthogonal time frequency space pulsone.
