On the Integration of Immersive and Telepresence Technologies in a Scaled Vehicle Driving Emulator

In recent years, the deployment of telepresence and immersive technologies in robotics has surged, significantly enhancing the capabilities of robots in critical applications such as rescue operations, demining, hazardous substance handling, and contagion prevention. These advancements have allowed robots to effectively assist or replace humans in environments that pose significant risks or are otherwise unsuitable for human involvement. This paper aims to enhance driver safety by integrating immersive and telepresence technologies into a scaled vehicle driving emulator by using WiFi technology in conformance with IEEE 802.11 b/g/n standards. The system features a haptic device incorporated in a vest, that conveys topographical changes to the driver through vibrations, providing a tactile feedback mechanism. Additionally, a graphical interface presents crucial information for vehicle control, including speed, inclination, and visual data. Our primary results show that the prototype utilizing WiFi technology, operates with minimal delays up to 105 meters in outdoor environments and 20 meters in indoor settings. This integration significantly enhances driver situational awareness and overall safety by advanced technological implementation.
