Simulation Study on Cutting Titanium Alloy with Micro-Textured tool

Titanium alloy (TC4), as a typical difficult-to- machining material, greatly affects the cutting force in the process of cutting titanium alloy. This paper studied the influence of the surface texture of the turning tool on the cutting performance. The simulation model of turning titanium alloy material is established by using ABAQUS finite element simulation software, and orthogonal cutting experiments are carried out. Three kinds of micro-textured tool with different distances from the edge are designed. The study examines how the distance of texture from the edge influences the cutting capability of a micro-textured tool. The results show that when he texture distance from edge is 35um, the cutting capability of the tool is improved most obviously, relatived to the untextured tool, the cutting force decreases by 10.4%, and the shear angle increases by 5.39%. Micro-textures can induce secondary cutting, making the inner surface of the chip more smooth and smooth.
