Difference in properties of Poincaré plot graphs between male and female subjects

We tested sex differences in Generalized Poincaré plot graphs, obtained by low pass filtering of RR interval time series, recorded from twenty male and twenty female subjects. We used seven measures: four were related to graph geometrical properties (Pearson’s coefficient; SD1; SD2; SD2/SD1); three to graph complexity (normalized number of edge crossings; directional complexity and directional entropy). Differences were detected in 2/4 geometric measures in nonfiltered graphs, where males had higher values than females. The graphs differed in 3/3 complexity measures, both in their moderately and heavily filtered forms, where higher values were detected in females. This result may be useful for potential future sex-tailored diagnstics and therapies of cardio-vascular diseases.
