The Influence of Transient Earth Voltage Sensor Dimensions on Its Performance as a PD Detector

Transient earth voltage (TEV) sensor is a partial discharge sensor that operates using a capacitive method. Partial discharge diagnosis using TEV has advantages, especially for high-voltage equipment enclosed in metal such as GIS and transformers. However, TEV sensors available in the market are expensive despite the simplicity of TEV sensors, which are essentially capacitors. So that the basic design construction of TEV consists of conductor plates separated by dielectric. Several researchers have attempted to create TEV sensors by conducting experiments and modifying various parameters. The previous research discussed the influence of dielectric thickness, such as silicone, on TEV performance in detecting partial discharge. The research indicates that TEV sensor design with silicone thickness of 2 mm and 3 mm exhibit good performance in detecting partial discharge. This study focuses on the influence of conductor plate dimensions on TEV performance. The research involved designing two TEVs with different conductor plate areas: $\mathbf{30} \times \mathbf{30}$ mm and $\mathbf{50} \times \mathbf{50}$ mm, using silicone dielectric with thicknesses of 2 mm. The TEV sensors designed are then tested by PD calibrator to see its performance compared to the commercial TEV.
