Exercisability of Python in Inclined Plane Tracking and Erosion Energy Calculations

The inclined plane tracking and erosion test is extensively used for qualifying materials intended for use in outdoor high voltage insulation applications. The scintillating current generated during the course of test, creates a Joule heating effect which consequently influences and degrades the test sample. The current signatures are often captured through oscilloscopes or data acquisition systems, from which power signals are obtained. By calculating the area under power curve, energy imparted to the test sample over the test duration can be ascertained. In this study, a script for the calculation of Joule heating energy during the course of inclined plane tracking and erosion test is attempted through Python. The versatility of Python language has often made it the preferred choice for engineers. Tests is performed at different voltage levels of 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5 kV for 2 hours each at 3 different sampling frequencies of 5, 50, and 500 KHz. Computed energy values in Python code are cross checked for veracity using numerical estimation techniques. This preliminary study demonstrates the adaptability of Python in handling big data which becomes difficult while using in traditional signal processing tools.
