Self-focusing of 10.6-µm radiation in liquid CS2

Self-focusing of 9-kW CO
2
laser pulses was observed in liquid CS
2
. The calculated coefficient of nonlinear index of refraction (n
2
) from experimental data is approximately 10
^-17
MKS, which is nearly three orders of magnitude larger than the nonlinear index coefficient observed for visible radiation.
