Synchronised View: A Comparison of Mixed Reality Annotations for Skilled Movement Training

In skilled movement training, such as martial arts, dance, or sports, mixed reality annotations are used to provide trainer’s feedback as the trainee practices the movements. The dynamic nature of movements and the difference in trainer-trainee viewpoints pose challenges for creating annotations. We present Synchronised View, a technique to add dynamic annotations to a virtual clone of a trainee’s body to provide skilled movement guidance authored by a trainer. The virtual clone is positioned and rotated such that the trainee has an out of the body viewpoint of their own movements as seen by the trainer. We conducted an evaluation with one trainer and 25 trainees to compare different types of annotations for skilled movement training. The results show that dynamic annotations improved ease of understanding, perceived preference, and perceived accuracy. Synchronised view offers different training strategies for the trainee to receive and understand movement feedback.
