Exploring the Impact of Arm Wearing Weight on VR Interaction Behavior

Hand-controller interaction is common in VR applications but is limited by the arm’s biomechanics and kinematics, especially in mid-air interaction. Improving controller-based interaction accuracy and efficiency is crucial. Based on previous theories that wearing a small amount of weight enhances human motor abilities, this paper studies the instability of hand-controller interaction and the influence of wearing weight while the user performs selection tasks in an immersive virtual environment. We introduce the Weighted Controller Method using a newly designed controller. Empirical experiments in a specially designed VR application showed that participants performed best with our method, despite minor fatigue. Implications for VR design and future research are discussed.
