Detecting Bias in Legal Language Models through Data Analytics

The use of advanced data analytics to uncover and mitigate bias in legal language models is important for ensuring the fairness and impartiality of automated legal systems. The research paper focuses on open document repositories for bias detection and analysis in legal language models-the result of training on large text collections dealing with legal material. The broad approach followed integrates quantitative and qualitative techniques from data analytics that make an inquiry into the language patterns and decision-making processes encoded in the model. We create a corpus of legal documents, such as case law, statutes, and legal commentary, publicly available, and the apply a series of NLP techniques (for instance, sentiment analysis and topic modeling) on the text to automatically detect possible biases. Further, we need to train several language models on this corpus using traditional machine learning algorithms and deep learning frameworks to investigate various aspects of how the bias is manifested. These results shows large biases in LMs regarding gender and race, which can be used as supportive argument to extend such biases and propagate historically inequitable treatment and decisions within the law. Using various statistical tests, apart from algorithms that detect bias, we quantify the magnitude and consequences of such biases. This paper demonstrates the importance of transparency and accountability both during the development and deployment of AI technologies within the legal field and offers pathways to more equitable AI applications.
