Cancer Risk Evaluation with Diabetes Mellitus by a Large Medical Claims Dataset

Although patients with diabetes mellitus are known to have an increased risk of developing cancer during follow-up, it is difficult to verify the risk due to diabetes mellitus of developing rare cancer at patients' life stage. Using a large dataset of medical claims, we examined the risk of developing cancer based on the presence or absence of diabetes mellitus in various cancer types, according to age and sex. The pattern of increased cancer risk due to diabetes mellitus differed in both men and women according to age and cancer locus. These results enable us to consider cancer screening strategies for diabetes mellitus patients adjusting age and gender.
