Analysis of Sound Symbolism Appears In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

Sound symbolism is a phenomenon where specific sounds evoke specific images. However, not all aspects of sound symbolism have been clarified. This study investigates ono-matopoeia used as sound effects in comic books to propose a hypothesis on sound symbolism in this context. We focus on “JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 2 (JoJo),” known for its unique onomatopoeia. Our goal is to identify the acoustic characteristics of “JoJo-ness” and formulate a sound symbolism hypothesis specific to JoJo. Using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), we classified the onomatopoeia in JoJo and the Manga109 dataset to highlight the differences. Additionally, we conducted subjective experiments to further elucidate the acoustic characteristics of JoJo-ness.
