The role of technology development in the Global Positioning System

The Global Positioning System (GPS) depends on several key space technologies for its existence and future applications. This paper discusses the roles of several technologies, with particular emphasis on atomic frequency standards, in maintaining GPS. The operational requirements of space systems impose constraints that often differ from those encountered in other commercial or military systems. Those constraints create both concerns and opportunities in supporting the research and industrial bases.
